Best for: Kids (and nostalgic adults)
Presenting the first-ever Christmas countdown for cereal fans by Kellogg's. This one gets our vote for the most unique calendar of 2017 and definitely one to appeal to the kids or nostalgic adults. You get to enjoy a different cereal every morning from Coco Pops to Rice Krispies for the reasonable price of just £4. The box doesn't open in the normal format (the boxes slide out from the side), however, it is still a novel idea to take you through December. Buy from Tesco (£4).

If you're a prosecco fan, you may want to check this out. Prestat Rocking Horse Advent calendar
Best for: Beautifully festive packaging
Prestat's Rocking Horse calendar is a feast for the eyes as it opens like a storybook to reveal what's inside. However, the magic doesn't stop there – the choccies are spellbinding too! Behind each door is a selection of milk chocolate bonbons with caramel and sea salt alongside a sweet festive story to read in the build-up to the big day. Of all the chocolates we tasted (and trust us, there were a lot), the sea salt bonbons inside this calendar were our absolute favourite. This one is extravagant and compared with the price of other high-end calendars, it's great value. Available from Prestat (£22.50).
Carluccio's Limited Edition Advent calendar
Best for: Italian food lovers
Calling all serious foodies, this calendar is bursting at the seams with delicious Italian delicacies. Restaurant and café chain Carluccio's is well-known for delicious award-winning products of which some are presented behind each door of this colourful calendar. Treats range from truffle butter to delicious panettone – a true Italian feast. However, it is expensive, so perhaps suited to those who are really dedicated to cooking with fine ingredients. Available from Carluccio's (£75).
That Boutique-y Gin Company Advent calendar
Best for: Indie gin fans
Quirky gin makers That Boutique-y Gin Company develop their range in collaboration with some of the word's finest and rarest distillers to create some of the most unusual blends (try their fab Moon Rock gin if you don't believe us, made with botanicals that were sent into space!). We love the festive packaging that matches the lovingly illustrated designs of their full-sized bottles. Every day throughout December, discover another sample of a unique gin that will instantly become your new favourite. Available from Master of Malt (99.95).
House of Newby 2017 Advent calendar
Best for: Fine tea drinkers
This sumptious treasure chest of teas is up there with one of the best designed Advent calendars of 2017. Behind the shopfront are 24 numbered drawers that slide open to reveal a selection of premium teas. A little on the pricey side but appropriately indulgent for Christmas, we reckon this would go down well at the office to share with other tea drinkers. The packaging can be used after Christmas to store jewellery, or would be perfect for the kids to play with. Available from Newby Tea (£55).
Montezuma's organic kid's Advent calendar
Best for: Good quality children's chocolate
If you're tired of giving your kids the average sugary chocolate of most Advent calendars, you should opt for one of Montezuma's wild and wonderful creations. We liked this one, particularly aimed at kids because as well as containing high quality white and milk chocolate, it also comes in an easy-to-open box – and they can colour in each door as they go! Also, the chocolates are slightly smaller than for grown-ups. Available from Montezuma's (£8.99).
Pukka Herbs Christmas Calendar
Best for: Discerning tea drinkers
Why start December off on the wrong foot? Cleanse your system in readiness for the festivities with Pukka's calendar of herbal teas. Hang it on the wall and fold downwards to reveal a different blend each day. Try Wild Apple & Cinnamon for a warming kick or sip on Three Mint to keep you fighting fit this winter. This is a great quality gift for someone who really appreciates a good cuppa – and it won't break the bank. Buy from Pukka Herbs (£7.99).
